Vantan Tokyo Fall 2012 collection showed yesterday. Vantan Tokyo is one of the leading design schools in Japan and one of the most prestigious in the world. Designers who showed: Cheryl Chee, Masato Miyata, Yuya Kubohara, Cheung Siu Yan
Bold: Well where to begin. From knits (which are very hard to do) to bold shapes and crazy oranges, these young designers took HUGE chances!
Strengths: Each designer had their own strengths. Cheryl made gorgeous knitwear. Masato used traditional geisha prints to make modern shapes, Yuya utilized colorblocking and Cheung was daring in her shapes.
Improvements: While most of the designs were innovative and daring, some proved to be too daring. A girl was on the runway almost topless in a mesh sweater. Another had an open vest under an open jacket. I really did not like this look and couldn’t see anyone pulling that number off. The designers are still learning and I feel they have found their true voice yet.
Overall, the show itself was a little confusing even when you looked at it from a per designer view. There was no story with the clothing and no one genre. Some clothing was couture, some was exhibition and some were ready-to-wear. I hope they all come back next season, because I would love to see their progress as designers.
